How to Keep Your Dog Safe at the Dog Park

Spring is the ideal time to start getting outside more with your dog. You can enjoy the warming weather and get some outdoor exercise. If you have one nearby, you can take your outdoor fun to the local dog park. But to help keep your pup safe at the park, keep these considerations in mind.

Make Sure Your Dog is Vaccinated

Talk with your veterinarian to make sure your dog is current on vaccinations. The dog park is just like any other venue where germs can spread. You want to do all you can to prevent the spread of illness to your furry friend.

Make Sure Your Dog is Healthy

You don’t want to be the person getting other people’s dogs sick. Never bring your dog to the dog park, or anywhere around other dogs for that matter, if she is not feeling well or showing signs of illness.

Practice Commands and Behavior

Before jumping into the dog park, take it slow with some practice. Take your dog on frequent walks, go to regular parks and other spaces without crowds, and practice commands and behaviors that you want your dog to master. It will be much easier to learn and improve commands in a quieter, less stimulating environment than the dog park. If a situation were to arise at the dog park, you need your dog to obey your commands.

Always Watch Your Dog

Even if you have been to the dog park many times, you should never take your eye off your dog. You need to be ready to stop any conflicts or misbehavior from arising. It is also advisable to learn dog behavior and body language as much as you can. This will help you to better identify warning signs in other dogs that you might not know.

Talk with your vet to get recommendations for dog parks, dog training if you need it, or other topics that will help you and your dog make the most of the dog park.
