Dogs make wonderful companions. The best type of companion is one who is with you for the long haul, through thick and thin. If your dog has been with you for a long time, that means you have a senior pet to care for.

Senior pets require extra care and attention. They have unique health and lifestyle needs that can help them feel more comfortable. You can care for your older dog by trying these ideas.

Feed Your Senior Dog the Right Food

Talk with your veterinarian about the dietary needs of your senior dog. Your vet can recommend specially formulated food that will offer the right balance of nutrients and calories.

Keep Your Senior Dog Active

While your older dog might prefer to lie around and relax, he still needs to move around. Make sure you keep up with regular walks. Your senior dog might even want to play from time to time too. Daily physical activity is important for overall health.

Help Your Dog Feel Comfortable

We all get aches and pains as we get older, and your dog is no exception. Look into comfortable bedding for your dog, so she can rest those achy bones.

Have Your Dog’s Blood Work Done

Every pet  needs to visit the vet on a regular basis for wellness checks. While you are there, get your senior dog’s blood work done. You can find out more about your pet’s health and know if any conditions are developing.

Make Sure Your Home is Senior-Friendly

As your dog gets older, he might not be able to navigate your home as easily. Check around to see if there are any modifications that can be done to make life a little easier for your dog. This might include a small ramp for the stairs, a larger dog door, or placing food in a more accessible place.

If your dog has been with you for a long time, you can show your appreciation by taking a little extra care of your older best friend. Ask your vet for more ideas.
